In 1973, teenaged Beth Bledsoe (Sophia Lillis) leaves her rural Southern hometown to study at New York University where her beloved Uncle Frank (Paul Bettany) is a revered literature professor. She soon discovers that Frank is gay, a secret he has kept for years. After the sudden death of Frank’s father, he reluctantly returns home for the funeral, with Beth in tow, to finally face a long-buried trauma.

About the director

Alan Ball’s off-off-Broadway play Five Women Wearing the Same Dress led to a job writing for television. While working for several years on sitcoms, he wrote the screenplay for American Beauty. Ball created the HBO series Six Feet Under and True Blood and wrote and directed the movie Towelhead. Originally from Marietta, Georgia, he lives in Los Angeles.
